DELIVERING $3.97m FOR SAFER ROADS IN WANDIN & YELLINGBO

01 April 2025

People living in Wandin East, Wandin North and Yellingbo will have a safer trip home thanks to over $3.97 million in Federal Government funding to improve 5 known crash sites in Casey under the 2025-26 Black Spot Program.

These projects will make an important contribution towards improving safety for all road users, with the Black Spot Program funding a range of safety measures including upgrades to:

·         Queens Road and Wandin East Road – $1.99 million to install a compact roundabout with raised safety platforms on all four approach legs, along with improved signage and line marking.

·         Clegg Road and Wellington Road – $677,000 to install an approach road hump and an intersection road hump on the northern approach of Wellington Road. A further $759,000 will fund kerb and channel installations, a splitter island, lighting upgrades, and pavement improvements.

·         Beenak Road and Queens Road – Realignment of the intersection to a staggered T-intersection on Beenak Road. High-friction overlay will also be applied at two bends on Macclesfield Road, including the Giles Road intersection.

·         Macclesfield Road (between Giles Road and 931 Macclesfield Road) – $189,660 to apply high-friction overlay at two bends, improving grip and reducing skidding risks.

·         Beenak Road and Hunter Road – $359,000 to install road humps on the approaches to the intersection, slowing vehicles and reducing collision risks.

The Albanese Government has substantially increased Black Spot Program funding, which is progressively rising from $110 million to $150 million per year.

The latest announcement will see 162 dangerous sites on roads in Western Australia, Victoria and Queensland upgraded through an over $85 million allocation.

This investment is part of the Albanese Government’s response to the worsening road toll, which includes progressively doubling Roads to Recovery funding from $500 million to $1 billion a year, and delivering nationally-harmonised data sets to inform road safety decision making.

More information on the Black Spot Program, including a full list of projects recently announced in Queensland, Western Australia and Victoria is available here.

Quotes attributable to Assistant Minister for Regional Development, Anthony Chisholm:

“This investment in Victoria’s roads demonstrates the Albanese Government’s commitment to building safer roads, reducing the crushing impacts of road trauma and supporting local jobs.

“We recently announced our significant boost to road safety funding, which included a commitment to increase annual Black Spot Program funding to $150 million from next year.

“Removing black spots across Australia’s road network forms a major part of our ongoing promise to work with state and territory governments to fund the priority road safety works they identify.

“The Program is also driven by communities, for communities. So, I encourage anyone who knows of a Black Spot near them to consider nominating that site for investigation.”

Quotes attributable to Senator Lisa Darmanin:

“Every driver, cyclist, and pedestrian deserves to travel safely, and this investment will make a real difference for people in Wandin, Yellingbo, and the surrounding communities.

“These upgrades will help prevent crashes, protect the community, and ensure families can get home safely. I know how important road safety is to locals, and I’m proud to see the Albanese Government delivering on this commitment.

“Safe roads don’t just save lives—they also give communities peace of mind. Whether it’s parents driving their kids to school, workers commuting, or emergency services responding to calls, these improvements will benefit everyone who travels through the area.
