460k to protect the Grey-headed Flying Fox on the Murray River Islands - Media Release

06 December 2024

The Albanese Labor Government is cleaning up the instream habitat and roosting refuges on Murray River islands in Indi thanks to a $460,452 investment.

The funding is part of the Government’s $200 million Urban Rivers and Catchments Program which is restoring rivers and waterways in our suburbs to better protect communities and native species.

This new project will restore 204 hectares of wildlife refuge on 2 large Murray River islands adjacent to the urban areas of Albury Wodonga home to many threatened species including the EPBC-listed Grey-headed Flying-fox and the Murray Cod.

The project will be delivered by Parklands Albury Wodonga.

Quotes attributable to the Minister for the Environment and Water, Tanya Plibersek:

“We want to leave nature better off for our kids and grandkids – and that’s why we’re restoring rivers and waterways in our suburbs with a $200 million investment.

“Nearly half of all nationally listed threatened animals and a quarter of our threatened plants are in urban areas, home to 96 per cent of Australia’s population.

“And with so many native plants and animals reliant on our rivers, creeks, wetlands, and estuaries, protecting and restoring the health of our waterways is essential.

“This critical funding is good news for native wildlife and the community – improving the quality of the urban spaces that we all share and love.”

Quotes attributable to Senator Darmanin:

“This funding is a game-changer for restoring the Murray River islands and supporting the community’s ongoing work to protect the precious habitats that native species like the Grey-Headed Flying-Fox and Murray Cod call home. It’s about safeguarding the region for generations to come.”

“The $460,000 grant is crucial to protecting this incredible waterway. It’s all about keeping the Murray River healthy and full of life, so our native wildlife can thrive, and future generations can enjoy it just like we do”
